    Is repair economically sensible?

    Consider the likely scope, uncertainty, disruption and repair cost alongside the realistic value and quality of replacement.

    What would replacement genuinely improve?

    A replacement may address safety, reliability, capacity or performance needs—but the improvement should be real and relevant to the user.

  • A suitable repair could reasonably extend useful life.
  • Replacement is being considered mainly because of a minor failure.
  • Avoiding premature disposal may be worthwhile.

A diagnosis or assessment may still change the picture.

Consider / Replace

When replacement may make more sense.

  • There are serious safety concerns.
  • Deterioration is severe or widespread.
  • Significant faults have kept recurring.
  • Essential parts are genuinely unavailable.
  • Repair is becoming disproportionately costly.
  • Replacement would materially address relevant performance needs.
  • A competent assessment indicates repair is inappropriate.

Safety overrides economics

Make the situation safe before debating repair value.

Repair-first and waste

Useful life is worth considering.

Extending useful product life can reduce premature disposal. Avoiding unnecessary replacement can reduce waste and may make better use of products and materials that already exist.
