Safety first

Immediate danger is not an ordinary fault-finding enquiry.

Fire, active smoke or burning, visible arcing, exposed live parts, electric shock, severe overheating or another obvious immediate danger needs safety action before any commercial service journey. Keep people away from the danger. If there is a fire, injury or immediate threat to life, contact the appropriate emergency service.

Do not remove consumer-unit covers, open sockets or switches, touch exposed conductors, perform live testing, repeatedly reset protective devices, bypass protection or dismantle fixed wiring. HSE explains that electricity can cause shock, burns, arcing and fire.

The same visible symptom can have different causes. These examples help describe the context but do not establish whether the installation, connected equipment or wider supply is responsible.

RCD or breaker keeps tripping

A protective device can operate for several reasons involving a circuit, connected equipment or another condition. Repeated operation requires assessment rather than repeated resetting.

Socket stopped working

A local accessory, connection, circuit or protective-device issue could be involved; another working socket does not identify the cause.

Switch stopped working

The switch, fixed connection, controlled fitting or circuit may require inspection before remedial work is chosen.

Lights flicker or cut out

A lamp or fitting may be involved, but recurring or multi-point flickering can also require fixed-installation assessment.

Power lost in part of the property

Loss limited to one area can indicate a property-side issue, though supply and metering context should be considered first.

Electrical buzzing or crackling

Unusual sound near fixed electrical equipment can be a warning sign. Do not open or approach damaged parts to investigate.

Abnormal heat or scorching can indicate unsafe operation and should not be treated as a routine inconvenience.

A burning or hot-plastic smell can indicate an urgent safety concern. Follow Safety First rather than trying to locate it by dismantling fittings.

Recurring operation can point to a continuing fault or overload context; forcing continued use can conceal the warning.

Intermittent electrical fault

Timing, load, movement, moisture, heat or previous changes may help a professional narrow an intermittent cause.

Weather exposure, damage, moisture and equipment suitability can change the risk and required professional scope.

Fault after new equipment was connected

The new equipment, its load, an existing circuit condition or another coincidental fault may be relevant; the sequence alone does not prove the cause.

Why professional suitability matters.

Fixed-installation diagnosis can involve mains electricity, protective devices, circuit identification, inspection and testing. The required knowledge, practical skill and evidence depend on the property, fault, work and jurisdiction; appliance repair and fixed-installation work are not interchangeable scopes.

No single qualification or scheme membership applies universally to every electrical task. Some resulting work may involve Building Regulations, notification, testing or certification requirements. Competent person scheme membership can provide one compliance route for covered work, but it is not identical to general competence and is not the only route. eServ does not currently claim to verify qualifications, scheme membership or certification capability.

Work-specific regulation

Not every electrical repair is notifiable.

In England, Approved Document P covers electrical safety in dwellings. The compliance and notification route depends on the resulting work: many repairs, replacements and maintenance activities do not need a separate building-regulations application, while other installation work can.

Competence and self-certification are different questions

An authorised competent person scheme may allow a registered installer to self-certify covered work. Membership is voluntary, and a building-control route may be available instead. Rules and terminology differ across UK jurisdictions.

What can affect cost?

Cost depends on the diagnostic work and what the evidence shows, not one headline rate. A useful quote should distinguish investigation from any subsequent remedial work and clarify assumptions, exclusions and documentation.

Electrical faults can affect homes, rented properties, shops, offices, hospitality premises and other small businesses. Access, occupants, business-critical equipment, safe shutdown and existing records can change the assessment and suitable professional scope.
